Holiday Survival Guide

Coach AB here to talk to you about some survival tips this holiday season. So as we know, Thanksgiving is this week, let’s talk about some tricks to take with you during Thanksgiving on visits with family and friends.

Tip 1: Healthy Pregame Meal

Make healthy choices earlier on in the day before you go to these visits. Make sure that you eat a healthy breakfast if, say, you’re meeting with friends and family midday to later in the evening. You wouldn’t go to the grocery store hungry would you?

Tip 2: Portion sizes. 

Portion sizes can be tricky – but here’s a helpful way to guesstimate.
We usually say protein the size of your palm, veggies the size of your fist. Of course, you can’t go wrong with more vegetables and then carbs about what you can fit into the palm of your hands. And again, it’s okay if it goes a little bit over. Portion size is where things can go wrong fast.

Tip 3: Next, get your protein in first. 

Okay, eat that protein, that turkey, whatever you have at Thanksgiving or Christmas, whatever, eat it first so you can avoid some glucose spikes and energy dips later in the evening.

Tip 4: Make it count

Pick two to three items you love or look forward to during this holiday season. For me, it’s my banana cream pie that my grandmother makes and cannolis because it’s an italian staple. So I prioritize having those at the dessert table.
*Bonus Tip – Browse the table before putting anything on your plate – that way you can pick and choose your most favorite options.

Tip 5: Relax

Don’t feel guilty. It’s the holiday season. You work hard. We want to keep you on track towards your goals with these first four tips. We also want to make sure that you’re in the right mindset for these things as well. Making sure that you can enjoy these without feeling deprived because balance is what we’re looking for. So yes, eat your protein, but yes, have the cannoli okay?
