If I was a beginner in the gym, here are my top 5 things I’d pay attention to when trying to make some wins to keep me motivated:
- Find movement that challenges you and something you enjoy.
I recommend some form of progressive overloading for weight training and something more low level like walking or hiking.
Why two types of movement?
So you challenge yourself and stimulate muscle building in the gym while also encouraging every day movement in some form that you like.
If done right – you’ll notice body composition changes (more lean look) while also feeling the physical benefits of stronger hikes or longer walks. - Eat your bodyweight in protein
This is the best bang for your effort and does so many things to help your health.
Build muscle, lose body fat & curb snacking.
If you’re having a hard time eating protein – the easiest way to start adding in more without volume is leaner cuts of meat.Instead of 85% ground turkey or beef – opt for the 93% lean. - For the love of all things, SLEEP.
Find a bedtime routine that works for you. 7-8 hours of sleep will do wonders for your recovery, weight goals and muscle building.
Stop revenge scrolling – it doesn’t do you any good to be on the phones for just as long as you should be asleep. (Check your screen time, I dare you!) - Find some metrics to track that won’t drive you insane.
Between all the devices and apps – you DO NOT need to track every single thing.
It feels limiting and time consuming.
Instead – find 2 things to track that will show you information that matters to YOU.
Ideally one thing that can be automated and another you can put 2 or less minutes into. This can look like stepping on the scale that delivers data to your phone (automated) and tracking your protein (less than 60 seconds in the moment) 5. - Find a way to keep yourself accountable.
This is all about developing a habit. When you do the thing, you’re casting a vote for the person you want to grow into.
“I am a person who workouts” therefore you get it done.
This could look like a gym partner, a community or fast tracking your success by hiring a coach.
I hope this helps anyone who’s looking to get started on their fitness goals today, tomorrow or next week.
Because you don’t need to wait to Jan 1 to make it happen!
