Food sensitivities – Your Body is Talking to You—Are You Listening?

Have you ever considered that the food you’re eating could be causing issues you didn’t even realize?

While I love getting protein from yogurt or sprinkling a little extra cheese on my meals, too much dairy causes painful acne for me.

My body is telling me something is off.

Have you ever eaten a meal and noticed bloating or gas a couple of hours later?
This could be your body struggling to process something you’ve eaten. Bloating and gas are two of the most common signs of a food sensitivity. Pay attention to how you feel after meals—if bloating happens regularly, there may be a particular food triggering it.

2. GI Distress

Stomach pain, nausea, or even more serious digestive issues could be linked to a sensitivity. Sometimes the reaction is immediate, but other times it can take hours or even persist throughout the day.
This is your body signaling that something in your diet isn’t sitting well.

While bloating and GI distress are common, food sensitivities can show up in unexpected ways.

1. Rashes or Hives

Skin reactions, such as rashes or hives, can often be linked to something you’ve eaten.
If your skin is suddenly breaking out (like my dairy acne!) or showing signs of irritation, it might be time to take a closer look at your diet.

2. Migraines

Many people suffer from chronic headaches or migraines without ever considering that food might be a trigger. For some, certain foods can cause intense headaches within hours of consumption.

3. Brain Fog

If you have trouble concentrating or experience decreased energy levels, this could be an inflammatory response from something you’re eating. Brain fog is another common but lesser-known symptom of food sensitivities.

1. Keep a Food Journal

One of the easiest and most effective ways to spot food sensitivities is by tracking what you eat and how you feel after meals.
In your journal, note down what you ate and any symptoms that arise—whether it’s immediate bloating, GI distress, a headache later in the day, or even a rash that appears the next morning.
Over time, you’ll start to notice patterns and potential triggers.

2. Try an Elimination Diet

An elimination diet, like Whole30 or Paleo, involves removing common trigger foods from your diet for 30 days. After the elimination phase, you reintroduce foods one by one to see how your body reacts.
This method can be incredibly revealing, helping you pinpoint which foods may be causing your symptoms.

Food sensitivities can be frustrating, but understanding the signs and tracking what you eat is a powerful way to take control of your health.
